We investigate how abstractive methods can be applied to QFS, to overcome such limitations. Such methods, however, produce text which suffers from low coherence. Query Focused Summarization (QFS) has been addressed mostly using extractive methods. We discuss the potential usage of such Q2ID technique through an example application. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our model by comparing with several state-of-the-art generation models on the Q2ID task. To address this new task, we propose a novel Contrastive Generation model, namely CtrsGen for short, to generate the intent description by contrasting the relevant documents with the irrelevant documents given a query. Unlike those existing ranking tasks which leverage the query and its description to compute the relevance of documents, Q2ID is a reverse task which aims to generate a natural language intent description based on both relevant and irrelevant documents of a given query. In this paper, therefore, we propose a novel Query-to-Intent-Description (Q2ID) task for query understanding. If a system could automatically generate a detailed and precise intent description for a search query, like human annotators, that would indicate much better query understanding has been achieved. As we may find in many benchmark datasets, e.g., TREC and SemEval, queries are often associated with a detailed description provided by human annotators which clearly describes its intent to help evaluate the relevance of the documents. ![]() However, it is not that precise to understand a search query at the intent class/cluster level due to the loss of many detailed information. Many different tasks have been proposed for understanding users' search queries, e.g., query classification or query clustering. ![]() Join us on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, and YouTube.Query understanding is a fundamental problem in information retrieval (IR), which has attracted continuous attention through the past decades. With her 2018 breakthrough album, El Mal Querer, she started heavily incorporating Auto-Tune - not to mask her voice, but to instead emphasize the nuanced texture of her performance, which fluidly shifts from ferocity to playfulness to sorrow. Her vocal tone, the intuitive melismas and rhythmic accents of which were built from training in flamenco for more than a decade, possesses a crystalline nature that in turn awakens emotions deep in the hearts of listeners. When Rosalía sings, it feels as if she’s pulling out decades of history from her throat and resurrecting them into thin air. A voice can be gorgeous like Mariah Carey’s, rugged like Toots Hibbert’s, understated like Willie Nelson’s, slippery and sumptuous like D’Angelo’s, or bracing like Bob Dylan’s. In all cases, what mattered most to us was originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog, and the breadth of their musical legacy. As our write-up for the man who ended up at Number 112 notes, “Ozzy Osbourne doesn’t have what most people would call a good voice, but boy does he have a great one.” That could apply to more than a few people here. Others have rougher, stranger, or more delicate instruments. Sure, many of the people here were born with massive pipes, perfect pitch, and boundless range. Talent is impressive genius is transcendent. You might notice that, say, there isn’t any opera on our list - that’s because our purview is pop music writ large, meaning that almost all the artists on this list had significant careers as crossover stars making popular music for the masses.īefore you start scrolling (and commenting), keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List. This new list was compiled our staff and key contributors, and it encompasses 100 years of pop music as an ongoing global conversation, where iconic Indian playback singer Lata Mangeshkar lands between Amy Winehouse and Johnny Cash, and salsa queen Celia Cruz is up there in the rankings with Prince and Marvin Gaye. ![]() The results skewed toward classic rock and singers from the Sixties and Seventies. When Rolling Stone first published its list of the 100 Greatest Singers in 2008, we used an elaborate voting process that included input from well-known musicians. These are the vocalists that have shaped history and defined our lives - from smooth operators to raw shouters, from gospel to punk, from Sinatra to Selena to SZA. And you can think of our list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time as a celebration of that bond. Aretha Franklin described her mission as a singer like this: “Me with my hand outstretched, hoping someone will take it.” That kind of deep, empathetic bond between artist and listener is the most elemental connection in music. ![]() This information might be web text, images, graphics or any other content.Įvery web browser, irrespective of its framework, incorporates a few fundamental components for performing some core functions. The work of a social media manager, as glamorous at it may be at times, does not come without its own set of challenges. Consider that missing one block period is equivalent to missing about two class days’ worth of content. ![]() It is always difficult when students are absent, but under block scheduling, absences create even more problems. ![]() If your district does not offer this, be sure to research and find your own. An untrained teacher can really flounder here, so be prepared to devote some time to training on block scheduling teaching techniques. This is not as easy as “just teach two lessons a day from your old stash of plans.” It should be no surprise that you will have to restructure your lessons, and maybe your teaching style, to fill this amount of time well. Since the kids see you every other day, they have time to digest and reflect on the lesson, and an extra night for homework, which can feel like less pressure for some students.īut, wow: 80-100 minutes is really a long time to keep kids engaged and focused! Don’t plan on lecturing all of that time away. A block period allowed for undisturbed time, leaving opportunity for more in-depth lessons and engagement with lessons from start to finish. Lessons can become more developed, not just a do now to start, but well aligned and luring anticipatory sets, followed by multiple intelligence content with time to practice skills, reinforce concepts- and actually wrap up and reflect! Without the rush of needing to “beat the bell” the pace slows, allowing for more one on one interaction to meet individual needs. There are high hopes around this potential solution, but how does it fare in real life classrooms? What are real teachers with real students saying about the success, and failures of this alternate scheduling? I can answer with the personal experience of a teacher recently immersed in an A-B block schedule in a NJ middle school.īig upside: finally, more time! This science teacher embraced the fact that she no longer had to break labs from the initial content and discovery lessons. Often, schools use an A-B day rotation, or block certain classes by quarter, or half year semesters. Although there are a variety of block scheduling models, in its basic form, it is fewer classes per day, with more time allotted to each of these classes. ![]() But how could we get more time out of the school day? Many districts are addressing this problem by ushering in block scheduling. Even the most experienced of teachers have watched their class minutes slip away and found that a traditional 50 minute period is just not enough time to do everything we want and need to do in a great lesson. How often have you been at the end of a lesson, ready to bring it home – and the bell suddenly rings! No time left to wrap up or reflect with the students as they abruptly rush off to their next class.
